Rear extension & loft conversion – St Ives, Cambridgeshire

Date November 2022

This project transforms a 1980s/90s corner-plot house in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, through a contemporary house extension and loft conversion designed for modern family living.

The brief called for a new kitchen and dining area opening to the garden, a snug living room, utility room, and a master bedroom suite within the loft.

The design responds sensitively to the home’s prominent corner setting, using a contextual palette of red and brown brickwork, clay tiles, and grey-framed windows. Two beehive-roof extensions reduce massing while creating bright, spacious interiors. A small courtyard garden separates the new snug from the existing living area, introducing daylight and visual connection through internal sliding doors.

The loft conversion, designed within permitted development rights, features a box dormer articulated by materials and glazing to integrate seamlessly with the existing structure.

This sustainable, context-driven design enhances the home’s character and contributes positively to the wider St Ives streetscape.
