In my previous practice, Cowper Griffith Architects Ltd one of the projects I worked on with a colleague Karen Lim (a fantastic conservation architect with a considerable amount of knowledge and talent) was 31 Great James Street, London.
The owners were dedicated to transforming a Georgian terraced property from run down asbestos ridden offices to a comfortable and sumptuous family home. It was decided a new modern extension was to be added to the rear that engaged with the building and its boundary in a careful and considered manner. This acts as a glorious surprise to those who enter and becomes the main destination when entertaining with the large kitchen and dining space.
The building required considerable work and effort from all the team to bring it back to its heritage roots. ASAP Construction Ltd deserve a lot of credit as they were studious and dedicated to ensuring the best possible finish throughout.
All of this hard work has been justified by the property being commended at The Georgian Group 2015 awards, only being pipped to the ‘Restoration To A Georgian Building In An Urban Setting Award’ by a worthy winner – Belmont House in Lyme Regis by The Landmark Trust. We want to offer our congratulations to both Cowper Griffith, the owners and ASAP Construction Ltd for this immense effort!
